All-New Z PROTO In Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario
Nissan's new Z PROTO is the first-gen car that essentially gives you a preview of the next-generation Nissan Z. When the Z gets into production in 2021, it is expected to be called the 400Z.
The Z Proto combines classic sports car proportions such as a long hood and a low rear deck. Combined with trademark Z stylistic features, it creates a fully contemporary look instantly recognizable as a Nissan Z. The new sporty-chic car adds 300ZX-like taillights, 240Z-ish headlights, and receives a few throwback touches.
However, it smartly pairs these design elements with a lot of modern features. Let's break down the highlights of the Nissan Z PROTO.
Nissan Z PROTO Highlights
An Overview of the Nissan Z PROTO
Twin Turbo V6 Engine
Twin Turbo V6 Engine
The Z PROTO derives its power from a zesty twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine. It is a modified version of the VR30DDTT engine found in the Infiniti Q50 and Q60. Those engines respectively garner 300 and 400-horsepower, which is certainly no overstatement.
The 400Z is expected to close in on that 400-horsepower mark. There is also the possibility that Nissan will slip in an option for a NISMO variant on the 400Z for even more high-powered spirited drives. Manual Transmission
Manual Transmission
The twin-turbo V6 is matched to a six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed is expected to deliver power to all four wheels smoothly, and this powerhouse comes with standard all-wheel drive.
While we know for sure that a six-speed manual transmission is standard, Nissan might offer a seven-speed automatic transmission as an option for buyers who do not drive stick.
Iconic Design
The Z PROTO features a lot of Nissan's iconic design elements. The taillights are a nod to the 300Z, while the headlights are much more reminiscent of those found on the 240Z. At 19 inches in diameter, this prototype has reasonably sized staggered-width wheels and taller sidewalls than what you would expect to find on a stylish sports coupe or especially on a showroom floor.
The new Z represents a more visionary approach to sports performance overall. The roofline peaks at the leading edge and tapers off from the back windshield header, much like the current 370Z. There are many historic Z styling elements all rolled neatly into one unique package here. As far as tech goes, expect to see many standard features commonly equipped on Nissan vehicles: a 20.32 cm touchscreen display, smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the Nissan Connect user interface.
The list of options most likely includes a premium sound system made by Bose and a built-in navigation system. You should also expect to see many driver aids, such as Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Available Cruise Control, and available Lane-Keep Assistance with the Lane Departure Mitigation system.
